Very interesting and nicely written account of their friendship and their rivalry - I’m not an existentialist myself at all, but I’ve admired both men… especially Camus - so it is nice that he won out in the end:-)
Disingenuous take on Sartre.....the jabs on his personality to discredit his criticism is bad writing if not mischievous.....camus was nothing but a colonial cunt who would reject the oppressed their freedom....a character does not make someone credible......a good natured fascist is still a fascist......trying to cover up camus obvious anti working class freedom tendencies by saying "his popularity clearly shows his correctness" is stupid and a bunch of humbug
The intellectual power of both authors is undeniable, though my own inclination leans, and will always lean, heavily toward Camus, whose works fascinate me (which is not to say I agree with him on everything). The breakdown of their friendship, driven by political ideologies and an inflexibility of thought and understanding that led to sometimes vulgar remarks, even in the wake of one of their untimely deaths, is all too familiar to anyone living within the current political landscape, where family relationships fracture over political differences. Amazingly written essay, I can’t ever read too much about these guys
Could have cut the fawning praise for Camus at the end. I thought it was over the top. I don’t think it was necessary to state who was right - or morally better. Kinda weakens the focus on the intellectual differences and nature of the friendship.
I liked camus's point but it was true he should have provided an alternative solution. All in all he was a little too nice to be "little crook from algiers" ♡♡
